What Is Mastering?
Mastering is the last step in the recording process, and the final polish that turns your collection of tracks into a complete album.
Using equalization, compression and limiting, a skilled mastering engineer with a trained set of ears maximizes the sound quality of your recordings and brings out the best features of your mix. Then, the engineer adjusts the volume of each track to similar levels and makes final EQ tweaks needed to ensure a smooth listening experience.
Finally, the engineer prepares a final master for the CD plant, which contains all the information needed to properly replicate your album and ensure the listener hears exactly what you intended when you recorded your music.
